Flash flood warnings in context: combining local knowledge and large-scale hydro-meteorological patterns

چکیده
Abstract. The small spatial and temporal scales at which flash floods occur make predicting events challenging, particularly in data-poor environments where high-resolution weather models may not be available. Additionally, the uptake of warnings hampered by difficulties translating scientific information to local context experiences. Here we use social science methods characterise knowledge flooding among vulnerable communities along flat Lake Malawi shoreline district Karonga, northern Malawi. This is then used guide a analysis factors that contribute area using contemporary global datasets, including geomorphology, soil land-use characteristics, hydro-meteorological conditions. Our results show interviewed have detailed impacts drivers (deforestation sedimentation), early warning signs (changes clouds, wind direction, rainfall patterns), distinct processes lead flood beginning end wet season. shows data corroborate this combining provides improved understanding within context. We highlight potential linking large-scale datasets with improve usability warnings.

Flash floods: Observations and analysis of hydro-meteorological controls
Understanding the hydro-meteorological processes that control flash flooding is extremely important from both scientific and societal perspectives. On the one hand, flash floods rank highly among natural disasters in terms of the number of people affected and the number of fatalities. The potential for flash flood casualties and damage is increasing in many parts of the world due to the social ...

متن کاملThe Securitization Flash Flood
What caused the flood of securitized products in the years immediately preceding the crisis? This paper presents evidence that demand for safe collateral in repo markets made it attractive for financial institutions to issue securitized products. Using the 2005 Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) as a natural experiment that shocked the demand for collateral, this p...

In this opinion article, we present the Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO). The goal of TAHMO is to develop a dense network of hydro-meteorological measurement stations throughout sub-Saharan Africa. On average, there will be one station per 1000 km2. The stations will be cost-effective through the use of new sensor and communication technologies. The station design is robus...
متن کاملLocal tsunami warnings: Perspectives from recent large events
We demonstrate a flexible strategy for local tsunami warning that relies on regional geodetic and seismic stations. Through retrospective analysis of four recent tsunamigenic events in Japan and Chile, we show that rapid earthquake source information, provided by methodologies developed for earthquake early warning, can be used to generate timely estimates of maximum expected tsunami amplitude ...
